DUCTLESS MINI-SPLITS

Ductless mini-split systems heat and cool individual rooms or zones without ductwork, which makes them a smart answer for spaces a central system cannot easily reach: home additions, converted garages, ADUs, primary suites, home offices, and older homes that were never built with ducts. Mars HVAC designs, installs, and services ductless systems across Los Angeles and Orange County as a licensed C-20 HVAC contractor (Mars Construction Industries Corp, CSLB Lic #1138550).

What Our Ductless Service Includes

A mini-split pairs one outdoor unit with one or more indoor air handlers, each with its own thermostat control. During a design visit we look at the rooms you want to condition, their sun exposure and insulation, and where equipment can be mounted cleanly. Our ductless services include:

  • Single-zone and multi-zone system design and installation
  • Wall-mounted, floor-mounted, and ceiling cassette indoor units
  • Refrigerant line sets routed and finished neatly
  • Permits and required testing for new installations
  • Repair and diagnostics for existing ductless systems
  • Filter and coil cleaning as part of ongoing maintenance

Where Ductless Makes the Most Sense

Ductless shines anywhere extending ductwork is impractical or expensive. Homeowners use mini-splits to make a converted garage or new ADU comfortable and code-compliant, to fix a primary bedroom that is always too hot, to give a home office its own climate, or to add air conditioning to a historic home where ducts would damage the character of the house. Because each zone runs independently, you condition only the rooms you are using instead of the whole house. Ductless systems are heat pumps at heart, so one system provides both cooling in summer and heating in winter — read more on our heat pumps page.

Installation and Care

Most single-zone installations are completed with minimal disruption: a small opening for the line set, a mounted indoor unit, and the outdoor unit placed on a pad or bracket. We verify operation in both heating and cooling modes and show you how to use the remote and washable filters. Ductless filters need regular rinsing, and the indoor coils benefit from periodic professional cleaning to keep airflow and air quality where they should be.

Ductless Mini-Split Questions We Hear Often

How many rooms can one system handle? A single outdoor unit can serve one room or several, depending on the model — multi-zone systems run multiple indoor units, each with independent temperature control. During a design visit we map the rooms you want to condition and size the system to them, so a single-zone addition and a whole-home ductless design are both on the table.

Do mini-splits heat as well as they cool? Yes — ductless systems are heat pumps, and in Southern California’s mild winters they heat very effectively. Many homeowners who add a mini-split for a converted garage or ADU are surprised to find it becomes the most comfortable room in the house in January as well as July.

What maintenance does a ductless system need? The washable filters in each indoor unit need regular rinsing — a simple task we show you how to do. Periodically, the indoor coils and blower wheels benefit from professional cleaning, which is part of the ductless service in our maintenance plans.
